In an IT channel that’s constantly in flux, it’s important to constantly evaluate and re-evaluate your technology and solutions. Lifting out any IT platform to switch to another is a large endeavor, but there are particular concerns when migrating from one backup and disaster recovery (BDR) platform to another.

On a recent episode of MSP Radio, Continuum Senior Director of Product Management Joe DeRosa discussed many of the considerations, preparations, and opportunities that exist when MSPs decided to migrate to a new BDR platform. Joe shared some specific insight about migrating to Continuum BDR, and then went on to highlight a new program set up to help partners migrate to Continuum BDR, which makes it easier than ever.

First and foremost, one of the most important aspects of getting Continuum BDR right is to size it properly. And, a lot of partners have existing hardware, so one of the first things that the [Network Operations Center (NOC)] will do in this program is to look at your hardware and validate it against the requirements of Continuum BDR. And then, they will actually look at the base image size itself that needs to be backed up, and they will make a recommendation for upgrades to your hardware to make sure that you’ve got it adequately sized. And what we’ve seen in the years that we’ve been offering Continuum BDR, is that a lot of the systems out there are actually undersized. So, from the vantage point of the partner and ultimately client success, it’s nice to have the NOC involved at that initial stage.

Then, the NOC looks at the backup environment itself and will run a health diagnostic on the protected machines to make sure they are up to standards, and will de-install existing backup agents before they install Continuum BDR’s backup agent.

Finally, the NOC will go through the set-up process of the BDR solution, and actually set up the retention point policies, per protected machine, on behalf of the partner. Ultimately, this is several hours of onsite time that the NOC can take off of partners’ hands.
