Channel Partners, 5/19/15

By In last month’s blog post, I focused on how to measure company benchmarks once you’ve made the switch to delivering managed IT services. However, while it’s important to set measurable benchmarks, that’s not enough. You also need a plan to overcome obstacles that could prevent you from meeting or exceeding your goals. By Raymond Vrabel, Director, Technical Account Management, Continuum Managed IT Services The fourth installment of a new monthly blog series offering tips and best practices on various ways MSPs can help their SMB clients work through the most challenging daily business issues. In last month’s installment of, “Better Call an MSP,” I discussed how to manage potentially non-profitable clients. This month, I discuss concerns that I have recently been hearing within our industry on how telecommunications companies (or telecoms) are being deemed a threat to solution providers. Frankly, it has been my experience that MSPs do not need to feel threatened by telecoms, and if there is talk that telecoms are set to move into the managed services game, it won’t be for some time.

Why RMM Is Right For Retail

Business Solutions, 4/15/15

All differences aside, however, retailers are feeling the pressure to do more with less, adopt new technologies to create a competitive advantage, and improve the customer experience just like other types of companies. So, the big question is: Is retail (finally) ready for RMM (and other managed services)? I spoke with industry experts from Continuum, LogicNow, N-able by SolarWinds, and Vigilix to get their perspective on this question as well as their advice to retail-focused IT solutions providers (ITSPs) that are looking to add or grow their recurring revenue.

In last month’s installment of “Better Call an MSP,” I discussed how to hire employees that will be effective and will go the distance long-term. This month, let’s talk about clients that might be costing you money. These clients may be potentially non-profitable to your business because they’re either not on board with your new business model, or they aren’t willing to make suggested technology and business changes that you are recommending, including standardizing on an IT services provider, hardware and set pricing.

Nate Teplow is marketing programs manager at Continuum Managed IT Services, with offices in Boston and Pittsburgh. Teplow is the host and producer of MSPradio and uses podcasts regularly in his marketing efforts. "I think podcasting is one of the most under-utilized channels in content marketing," says Teplow. Podcasts, he says, provide an opportunity to reach new audiences who can listen to content while doing other things-e.g. driving to work, mowing the lawn or working out at the gym."No other content marketing channels can really compete with that," he says. "They all require a user's full attention to consume." Additional benefits, he says, include a less cluttered marketing space for podcasts than, for example, for blog posts. In addition, he says, podcasts provide an opportunity for listener intimacy-there's just something very personal about listening to the voice of the podcast host.

In speaking with some of Continuum’s partners at our recent Partner Advisory Council (PAC) meeting, one of the challenges discussed was the hiring process – and more importantly, how to retain and keep solid, long-term employees. Several of the PAC members I spoke with noted that they want to not only become better at hiring, but also want to have a company that’s based on low employee turnover. While it’s true there have been countless books and articles written on this topic on a general level, a point was made that there is a need for more shared best practices and techniques specific to the MSP community. Having personally participated in hiring and recruiting processes that have worked, here are some tips to keep in mind when starting the hiring process to save both time and money – and to ensure that the hire is an appropriate long-term fit.
