Over the past few years, IT news headlines have been dominated by cyber security—its latest hacks, threats and defensive advancements. However, with all of this attention given to the enormous amounts of data stolen or the enterprise-level costs, it becomes difficult for the need for security services to resonate with your SMB customers.
While the stakes are at an all-time high for virtually every business, MSPs are challenged with changing this perception of “impending doom” and educating SMBs on the real threats to their business. 3 Things to Keep in Mind
When approaching security conversations with SMB clients and prospects, there a few key themes you need to consider.
The first is that SMBs have become the main targets of cyber attacks. In fact, a Ponemon Institute report found that 61 percent of SMBs experienced a cyber attack between 2016 and 2017. The threat of attack is no longer limited to the enterprise. There’s a growing direction toward attacks against SMBs because hackers know they are unprepared to defend themselves—making them very easy targets.
Second, the foundational security tools SMBs might have in place today simply aren’t cutting it anymore. This isn’t because the tools aren’t working or their people aren’t managing them correctly. It’s because advanced threats like hyper-targeted malware and ransomware are becoming so sophisticated that they’re able to bypass the antivirus or firewalls that SMBs assume are keeping them protected.
And finally, when we ask MSPs “what would happen if your clients got attacked?” the main answer is “we would be held responsible.” Your SMB clients would blame you, the MSP, if they were to experience a security incident.
Let’s put it this way: there’s a high likelihood that your SMB customers will be targeted for an attack, there’s high likelihood that current protection tools aren’t going to stop those attacks, and there’s a high likelihood that the MSP will be held accountable.
